Visual Resources

The Visual Resources Collection (VRC) of the Department of Art History at Pomona College is open to the faculty, students and staff  of all The Claremont Colleges. The Collection includes digital images, 35 mm slides, videotapes, DVDs and books and periodicals relevant to the study of Art History. The Curator can help in finding images and information on art and architecture.

Digital Images

LUNA

LUNA is a software program which allows faculty, students and staff of The Claremont Colleges to manage, access and present digital images. LUNA images are accompanied by cataloging data which allows for in-depth searches of the collections. LUNA includes a presentation software, or the images can be used in PowerPoint presentations. The LUNA site supported by Pomona College includes many collections of images. The Pomona Visual Resources Collection in LUNA is one of those collections and offers nearly 13,000 high quality and well-documented images of art and architecture, from the Prehistoric period to the 21st century. To access  LUNA, go to http://luna.najwc.com. If you are on the 7C network, you do not need an account to view the images. If you would like to save groups of images for use, you need to self-register an account; go to the LUNA page, and click on “Register” in the upper right side.

For further information on levels of access and restrictions, go to http://sax.najwc.com/luna/.

ARTstor

The Claremont Colleges Library subscribes to ARTstor, a digital collection of over one million images of the arts, architecture, humanities and sciences. These images are available to all faculty, students and staff of The Claremont Colleges. You will need to register for a free account before you can download images.

Slides

Yes, we have 35mm slides—c. 125,000 of them. Come visit to see what images were like in the not-so-far-distant past. Eventually the slide collection will be culled and reduced in size. In the meantime, if you are partial to slides, you can check them out and use them (we still have slide projectors).

Audiovisual Materials

The Visual Resources Collection includes more than 500 DVDs and nearly 400 videos on art and visual culture. These materials can be checked out for 24 hours (extensions available through the curator of visual resources).

Reference Library

The Collection houses over 1,000 books on the arts, architecture and visual culture. In addition, the department of art history subscribes to important English-language periodicals. These materials do not circulate, but can be used in the Library.
